Did you know that cilantro tastes like soap to some people? That's because different people have different versions of a specific smell receptor gene that changes how you perceive the smell, and therefore taste, of cilantro. In her 45-minute presentation, Dr. Cole will go over the basics of genetics, how they relate to taste, and what it means to have a higher genetic risk for common conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Dr. Cole studies genes and sensory receptors in our body that give us different food preferences. Her research focuses on how we can use that knowledge to help people eat better. https://jcolelab.com/
The Aurora History Museum's Summer 2024 Speaker Series aims to share some of the research happening in our backyard with the community. CU Anschutz is a leading center for medical research, and is in Aurora! Come to these free talks to learn about relevant medical advances. These presentations are made for the general public; you don't need to know anything about science or medicine to learn something new here.
